NOTES ON SLAVERY IN BRAZOS COUNTY compiled by Bill Page, copyright 1993 The following appeared in "The Brazos Genealogist" in Volume XIV Numbers 3 & 4. A Negro Taken Up: On the night of the 5th inst., at the house of John MILLICAN, on the east side of the Brazos, 10 miles above Washington. Says his name is LUKE, and his master, Eli BORDLOW, lives in La., on the east side of Red River, 7 miles above Campty: he is about 40 years old, 5 ' 10 " high, nose short and thick, brow high, hair mixed with grey, complexion common; he has a scar over the right eye about 3 inches long, caused by a blow with a stick from a mulatto; a little impediment in his speech; states that he has now none of the clothes he wore when starting, which may have been in the latter part of May .... Johnson, now belongs to Mr. MARTIN of Chappell Hill and was hired to Mr. McARTHUR of Grimes Co. ... Washington American, 25 June 1856, p.3. $50 Reward ! Runaway, from the subscriber living near this place, my Negro boy ABE ... he carried with him $ 40 or $50 ...; was at Millican's depot June 25th, trying to make his escape to Galveston with my other Negroes. (Houston) Tri-Weekly Telegraph, 14 July 1863, p. 2. Committed to jail at Tarrant Co., Jan. 16, 1865, a boy ALLEN, and that he belongs to J.C. JOHNSON, Brazos Co., Texas. Age about 34, 5' 5" or 6" high, 160 lbs. Mulatto or copper color; scar above right eye ... Texas State Gazette, 15 Mar. 1865 BRAZOS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS MINUTES, BOOK A [pp. 504-505]] 6 May 1844: John MILLICAN made an affi-davit that 2 Negro men named GRANVILLE and SQUIRE said to belong to the estate of Mrs. ROGERS in the U.S. had been guilty of taking up and branding a colt which they did not own. The Court instructed the sheriff to serve a writ to the slaves and set a trial date at Boonville ... On 11 May 1844, the sheriff had not served the writ, and the court found the original affidavit to be insuf-ficient. Elliot MILLICAN made an additional affidavit concerning the crime, and the sheriff was again instructed to serve the writ. The trial was rescheduled ... [p. 510] 1 July 1844: The writ still had not been served, and the case was continued. [pp. 510-511] 20 July 1844: Henry G. HUDSON, the county coroner, testi-fied that GRANVILLE, "a colored slave" said to belong to Mrs. ROGERS, on July 14 did steal one bolt of calico worth $8, property of Joseph FERGUSON. [pp. 511-512] H. HANOVER, prosecuting attorney, vs. GRANVILLE and SQUIRE for taking up and branding a colt; "jury of 12 good and lawful men" found the defendents not guilty. The court then tried GRANVILLE for the theft of the cloth. H. HANOVER, prosecuting attorney; GRANVILLE found guilty. HARDIMAN of Brazos Co., not dated: Ned aged 45; SARAH aged 26; and 3 children (names not given) aged 12, 10 and 5. p. 141 Transcribed copy of contract between Hiram HANOVER and Phebe HILL, dated 1 Feb. 1861, for the hire of slave woman HANNAH; HANOVER hired HANNAH for the sum of $ 125/year, payable in advance; contract specified that if she died, HANOVER would receive a refund for the remaining portion of the year. CARTER must have felt strongly about this case -- he was ordered placed in jail until he paid the fine. p. 25: Stephen GREER p. 33, Sept. 8, 1857. "State of Texas vs. FREDERICK, a Negro slave" indicted for murder; signed Jos. M. PRICE, foreman of the grand jury. p. 38: FREDERICK arraigned and pled "not guilty". pp. 48-49: trial held, Harvey LOVE, foreman of the jury ... FREDERICK was convicted of manslaughter and remanded back to the Brazos Co. jail. The sheriff was to punish him "by branding him forthwith and with all possible dispatch on this day with a hot iron in the shape of the letter c upon the left cheek which and shall be inflicted as to rendor no greater pain than that which is unavoidable, and in such manner as only to leave an indellible impression and not to lacerate the cheek ..." p. 195: "State of Texas vs. James F. On 21 Aug. 1852 Rebecca RECTOR, formerly Rebecca WILLIAMS, took possession of a Negro woman named SUSAN, aged about 25 but apparently never paid for her. Rebecca refused to return the woman to JOHNSON. Also on about 21 Aug. 1852 Rebecca Williams sold to JOHNSON a Negro boy named DANIEL, in exchange for a Negro woman named SARA, aged about 25, but Rebecca still possessed the woman. DANIEL was actually the property of the estate of H.G. WILLIAMS, the father of Jack WILLIAMS, the late husband of Rebecca ... p. 127 ... "It was always said that William Templeton MILLICAN was the purchaser of BERRY. I saw money paid for BERRY by John and Wm. Templeton MILLICAN. Indebted to Sam MAXWELL for FRANK, HANDY, HARRIET, JOHN, SIMON, FLORA, & FRANK a child purchased by the defendent from MAXWELL on 17 Feb. 1857. pp. 313-315 Fall Term 1858 -- John SWENSON, resident of N.C., filed suit agains t Daniel MAXWELL & William DUNLAP; Daniel MAXWELL on 28 June 1854, along with R. & W.H. MAXWELL and T.C. NORTH gave a note to pay for the hire of 5 Negroes on 1 Feb. 1855 -- BRYANT, GILFORD, WASHINGTON, JOE and LEWIS -- said Daniel M AXWELL left N.C.; MAXWELL then handed over the slaves to DUNLAP. pp. 316-318 23 May 1860. Thomas H. WILLIAMS of N.C. against Daniel MAXWELL and William DUNLAP; on 22 Feb. 1854, Daniel MAXWELL, with R. MAXWELL, Wm. H. MAXWELL, and T.C. NORTH, promised to pay on 1 Jan. 1855 for the hire of ANDREW and WASHINGTON; Daniel MAXWELL may have been living in Harris Co. at the time of this lawsuit. BRAZOS CO.
