SOME BRAZOS COUNTY PARDONS AND PAROLES, 1887-1889 Compiled by Bill PAGE, Copyright 2002 The following abstracts were taken from the microfilmed Executive Record Books Pardon Register 1886-1889. P.178: D.A. BELL was convicted of assault to rape at the March 1885 term of the Brazos Co. District Court and sentenced to 2 years. He was given a full pardon on 26 Feb. 1887. P.241: John D. SMITH was convicted of theft at the Sept. 1884 term of the Brazos Co. District Court and sentenced to 3 years. He was given a full pardon on 24 May 1887. P.286: Marion SHANNON was convicted of 2 cases of theft at the Oct. 1881 term of the Brazos Co. District Court and sentenced to terms of 5 and 8 years. He had his sentences commuted to one term of 6 years on 2 Aug. 1887. P.293: Lewis VANHOOK was convicted of murder in the 2nd degree at the Spring 1875 term of the Brazos Co. District Court and sentenced to 5 years. He was given a full pardon on 12 Aug. 1887. P.440: Robert SEATS was convicted of murder at the Fall 1870 term of the Brazos Co. District Court and sentenced to life. He was granted a full pardon on 7 May 1888. P.591: Sam TULLY was convicted of murder in the 2nd degree at the Mar. 1887 term of the Brazos Co. District Court and sentenced to 5 years. Numerous people asked the governor for clemency, including District Judge COLLARD, county attorney HENDERSON, 10 of the jurors who tried the case, and 300 or more citizens of Brazos Co. He was given a full pardon on 9 Oct. 1888. P.674: Robert DRIVER was convicted of assault at the Oct. 1880 term of the Brazos Co. District Court and sentenced to 2 years. He was given a full pardon on 9 Jan. 1889.
