Brazos County, Texas LAWYERS, MINORS AND NAME CHANGES: EX PARTE ACTIONS IN THE DISTRICT COURT, 1846-1900 abstracted by Bill PAGE, copyright 2002 Researchers may think that court records only list persons involved in lawsuits. Such records actually include various kinds of "ex parte" actions (those involving one party), including applications to practice law. A few of the applications note that the person already had a license to practice law in another state. The District Court records also document requests to remove the disabilities of being a minor (that is, grant someone under the age of 21 all the rights, except that of voting, of a person who was 21 or older). District Court records include six requests for name changes. These records also list some naturlizations; those were cited in a previous article and are not repeated here.
